As most freshmen begin to arrive on campus for summer school and training, Dior Johnson will be looking to find his school for the year very late in the process. Johnson has decommitted from Oregon after Will Richardson, the Duck’s point guard surprisingly returned to school. Now Johnson will look for a new school, making it his third commitment when he decides where he will spend his freshman season. Johnson had originally committed to Syracuse pretty early as a high schooler before deciding against it a year later.
Most schools with the transfer portal are short on scholarships this far into the “spring period” which is now entering summer. Alabama and Arizona State were two of the other schools recruiting him besides Oregon and Syracuse, the two schools he has now previously committed to. Alabama is the place more guards have become interested in with Nate Oats style of play while Bobby Hurley is known to let his guards go at Arizona State.

Johnson the player has seen his stock drop over the past year in terms of ranking. He was at one point seen as the best point guard in the class of 2022. Now Johnson is outside of the top five point guards in his class but he’s still got loads of potential in his game. He’s got great height for a point guard and is still a great passer of the basketball. He’s better around the basket as a scorer but can step outside and knock down shots with some level of consistency. He’s maybe not seen as the dynamic guard he was thought of and expected to be a couple of years ago but if he finds the right fit in college it would be silly to count him out as a potential one-and-done guard.
