Daniel Dubois is reportedly “finalizing a deal” to fight heavyweight contender Kevin Lerena on November 26, 2022. A venue has not yet been determined, but it is likely to take place in the U.K.
Prior to the deal being put together for Lerena, the 25-year-old heavyweight contender was allegedly working on a deal to fight 43-year-old Lucas Browne. However, the British Boxing Board of Control reportedly stepped in and prevented the fight from happening because they reportedly felt Browne was too old to fight Dubois.
“I’ve come off two great knockout wins against one of the better fighters in Australia and an up-and-coming fighter in Junior Fa,” Browne said earlier this week.
“I knocked him out in one round. I currently hold an IBF and WBA Regional title and a Top 15 ranking with the WBA. I’m apparently too old. You finally get the greatest news ever that you’re going to challenge for the world title. Then, some board somewhere says he’s 43, he’s too old, we’re not going to sanction him.”
In light of the news, Dubois pivoted to Lerena. He will look to extend his reign as the WBA “Regular” Heavyweight Champion after stopping Trevor Bryan in the fourth round four months ago. His opponent, Kevin Lerena, enters the ring with a record of 28-1 with 14 knockouts. In September, he won the IBF Intercontinental Heavyweight Championship by defeating Mariusz Wach in dominant fashion. Despite his recent success, Dubois will likely be a heavy favorite.
