Claressa Shields will not fight Savannah Marshall for the undisputed middleweight title on September 10, 2022 as previously scheduled. Additionally, Alycia Baumgardner will not share the ring Mikaela Mayer on September 10, 2022 in London as previously scheduled. Instead, it appears that Mayer, Marshall, Baumgardner and Shields will fight on October 15, 2022 in London on ESPN+.
Top Rank postponed both title fights following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Her son, Prince Charles III, issued a statement shortly thereafter.
“We mourn profoundly the passing of a cherished sovereign and a much-loved mother,” Queen Elizabeth II’s son, King Charles III, said.
“I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”
Due to the postponement, Claressa Shields-Savannah Marshall will likely take place on the same day as Deontay Wilder’s return bout. The former WBC Heavyweight Champion will battle heavyweight contender Robert Helenius in New York at the Barclays Center. Also, former super middleweight champion Caleb Plant looks to bounce back following his stoppage loss against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in 2021.
With the loss of Top Rank’s boxing card, a hole has been left in the weekend’s boxing schedule. However, Social Gloves plans to move forward with a main card that features Le’Veon Bell and Adrian Peterson among others. Fortunately, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will put his titles on the line against Gennadiy Golovkin on September 17, 2022. WBC Junior Bantamweight Champions Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez will also defend his title against Israel Gonzalez.
