The Detroit Lions have signed former Philadelphia Eagles defensive back CJ Gardner-Johnson to a one-year contract. While the Eagles did make an attempt to keep the defensive back they traded for this past offseason with New Orleans, the two sides seemingly could not come to terms. The one-year deal is worth $8 million with $6.5 million guaranteed once he signs the deal. While the defensive back likely hoped for a long-term deal, he signs a prove-it deal with a young and hungry team in the Detroit Lions. This move paired with others could help the Lions compete this upcoming season.

This past season with the Philadelphia Eagles, CJ Gardner-Johnson recorded 61 solo tackles, 67 total tackles, one sack, eight passes defended, and six interceptions that he returned for 54 yards and zero touchdowns. Gardner-Johnson is an incredibly valuable defender that can play multiple positions in multiple defensive packages. With New Orleans and Philadelphia, he played as a cornerback, safety, and nickelback.
The value to a younger defense that a player like CJ Gardner-Johnson can bring could be immeasurable. He already has plenty of NFL Playoff experience and success which could be invaluable for the team down the stretch of the season. The hope for the defensive back is this deal will help him get a long-term deal next offseason.
