The Cleveland Cavaliers are interested in acquiring Los Angeles Lakers veteran guard Jose Calderon and Dallas Mavericks big man Andrew Bogut, according to a new report from ESPN.
Both Calderon and Bogut are currently under contract but it’s believed that the Lakers and Mavericks are open to dealing them. The Cavs are also reportedly interested in one of Bogut’s teammates, Deron Williams.
ESPN’s Marc Stein has the details of the Cavs’ thinking:
They’re hoping/rooting/wishing for a quality veteran or two to pop onto the free-agent market via buyout after the Feb. 23 trade deadline passes.
Los Angeles Lakers guard Jose Calderon and Dallas Mavericks center Andrew Bogut, league sources tell ESPN.com, have emerged as two players who greatly interest the Cavs in their search for bench help.
The NBA’s reigning champions, who come face-to-face with Anthony in Saturday night’s ABC showcase game at Madison Square Garden, are also closely monitoring Bogut teammate Deron Williams.
Cleveland has expressed interest in several players at different positions this season. Their search has expanded in 2017, largely because of how bad the team struggled in January.
The next few weeks will help determine Cleveland’s future and how well they can challenge teams such as the Golden State Warriors. They have a wide variety of players to choose from — Lance Stephenson, Mario Chalmers, Jordan Farmar, Andrew Bogut, Larry Sanders to name a few. The Cavs recently hosted a free agent mini-camp with some of those guards in attendance.
Whether players such as Bogut, Williams or Calderon get bought out by their respective teams is yet to be seen, but Cleveland understands that it can also take an avenue via trade or scour the free agent market.
