Undisputed super middleweight champion Saul Canelo Alvarez will return home to Mexico this year. The world-renowned boxer has teamed up with Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro to inform the public that he will hold his next fight in Jalisco, Mexico. Alvarez has not formally announced who he will fight next, but multiple reports indicate that he will fight John Ryder on May 6 and it will be broadcast through DAZN Pay-Per-View.
Alvarez last fought in Mexico back in 2011. He stopped Kermit Cintron within the distance to win the WBC super welterweight title at Monumental Plaza de Toros México. Since then, he has spent most of his time collecting belts in Texas and Nevada. Most recently, he moved up to light heavyweight to challenge Dmitry Bivol. Ultimately, Bivol handed Alvarez his first loss since September 2013.
After losing to Bivol, Alvarez underwent wrist surgery and has been sidelined since last fall. Since then, Alvarez’s potential opponent, John Ryder, claimed the interim WBO Super Middleweight Title. Parker defeated Zach Parker by technical knockout after Parker suffered a hand injury toward the end of the fourth round.
“I want the big fights, the Canelo fight,” Ryder said after the fight.
“It would be a dream to fight Canelo on Cinco de Mayo or be upgraded to full champion.”
In May, Ryder may have the opportunity to make his dreams come true.
