Sebastian Fundora will defend his interim WBC Super Welterweight Championship this spring. The undefeated contender will fight Brian Mendoza on April 8, 2023 in California.
Fundora is a 25-year-old West Palm Beach, Florida native with a near-perfect record of 20-0-1. Standing at 6’5 with an 80-inch reach, the emerging contender has taken a step up in competition recently. In April, he managed to stop Erickson Lubin in an action-packed fight on Showtime. Six months later, he beat Carols Ocampo by unanimous decision at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
Fundora’s next opponent, Carlos Mendoza, is a New Mexico native with nearly 10 years of pro experience. Mendoza holds a record of 21-2-0 with 15 knockouts, but he has hit a bit of turmoil recently. The super middleweight boxer has lost two of his last five fights. However, he has managed to bounce back with two consecutive wins against Jeison Rosario and Benjamin Whitaker.
Elsewhere in the welterweight division, Jermell Charlo is sidelined with a hand injury. As a result, his next opponent, Tim Tszyu, will fight Tony Harrison in Australia. Meanwhile, it remains unclear when former champion Brian Castano will return to the ring.
