The weekend box office numbers are in and it was a good weekend for Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson! Their new buddy style action flick ‘The Hitman’s Bodyguard’ easily topped the box office with an estimated $21.6 million. The numbers far exceeded expectations with some estimates originally predicting that the film would open to around $16 million. Star power is not the box office driver it used to be back in the day, but the combined audiences of Reynolds and Jackson may have just been enough to make this film stand out from the pack. ‘Annabelle: Creation’ finished second with a very strong second week showing. ‘Annabelle: Creation’ dropped a little over 50% from week to week, but the film only cost around $15 million to produce which makes its second-weekend haul of over $15.5 million even sweeter. The film has already grossed over $160 million worldwide. ‘Logan Lucky’ landed in third place by bringing in an estimated $8 million. The debut for Steven Soderbergh’s first film out of retirement was lackluster by many standards. Even though the film was very well-received critically. It’s always disappointing to see a highly praised, original film underperform at the box office, but it’s sadly the case more often than not. ‘Dunkirk’ finished in fourth by bringing in an additional $6.7 million. With its performance this weekend, ‘Dunkirk’ has managed to stay in the top 5 domestically for nearly a month since its release. ‘The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature’ rounded off the top 5 by finishing fifth and bringing an estimated $5.1 million.
