Chris Eubank Jr. is still searching for his next opponent, but it appears that promoter Ben Shalom has narrowed down the search a bit. A recent report from Boxing Scene that Eubank Jr. will likely fight for a world title or share the ring with former super welterweight champion Liam Smith next.
“We want Chris to fight for a world title or Liam Smith next, those are the two most obvious routes,” Shalom said, according to Boxing Scene.
“Liam has looked really good in his last two fights and I think he fancies it at 160. Liam Smith, a world title and then the bigger fights will come for Chris.”
Previously, Eubank Jr. eyed a bout with Kell Brook, but the former welterweight champion decided to retire earlier this year. According to Shalom, that may have been the best decision for both parties.
“I’m kind of glad the Kell Brook thing didn’t happen because Kell Brook should have retired, and for Chris’s sake, I think he is really talented enough to win a world title,” Shalom explained.
“I know that financially the Kell Brook fight made sense, but he is good enough to win a world title and that would hang over him. The time is now.”
Eubank Jr. is 32 years old with a record of 32-2 with 23 knockouts. He has captured the interim WBA middleweight title and the IBO super middleweight title, but he has failed to land major fights in either division.
