Golf
(Thomas Ward)

New to the game of golf? Golf is an excellent sport that many people all around the world enjoy playing, and it is easy to see why. Golf can be a relaxing sport and one which is not as intense or demanding as others but still a brilliant form of exercise and one that allows you to enjoy spending time out in nature. It can also be a game that is difficult to get the hang of when starting out which causes many people to give up before they have started to enjoy the game. With this in mind, here are a few tips for golf beginners which will hopefully help.

Practice At The Range

Much like any activity, practice makes perfect, which means that you need to put in plenty of time at the driving range before you head out onto the course. This is the perfect space for mastering your stroke and building your confidence and you should find that lessons are available at most golf clubs. You should also film your swing so that you can see what you are doing well and areas that you could make improvements.

Get A Lesson

Following this, it is a smart idea to get a lesson when starting out so that you can learn the proper way to play golf. It is very easy for people to adopt negative habits to their swing when first starting out, but a lesson should help you to develop a good swing from the start, which will make it much easier to succeed.

Technique Over Power

People immediately want to get the driver out and start driving the ball as far as possible but this is not smart for beginners. Instead, you should be starting with an iron or pitching wedge and focusing on technique over power. Once you have mastered the technique, you can then start to add more power and work your way up to the driver.

Work On Your Short Game

It is vital that you do not forget to work on your putting as there is no point in driving if you can’t sink a putt. This is a completely different skill and one which needs lots of practice to get good at so do not overlook the importance of working on your short game.

Practice Holding As Often As Possible

The grip will be critical to your success, but this can feel strange and unnatural at first. This is why you need to get used to holding the club in the proper grip by practicing as much as possible, even if this is just around the home. You also need to make sure that you have a high-quality glove to provide protection.

Go With Friends

It is a good idea to play golf with friends or family as opposed to just by yourself. This can add fun to the game, it can help you to get used to playing with other people, and if they are more experienced, then they may be able to offer some pointers.

Use The Internet

The internet is a brilliant resource for golfers and there are many ways that a beginner can benefit from using the internet. This includes reading golf blogs, joining online communities, watching helpful videos, listening to podcasts and following relevant individuals/organizations on social media. This will help you to immerse yourself in the world of golfing and should inspire you to continue learning.

Learn About The Pros

You should also learn about the pros as a way to learn more about the game, find inspiration and pick up a few helpful tips. There are many great pros to look at, including Los Angeles native Troy Mullins who is known for her enormous drive and beautiful swing – there is certainly a lot that could be learned from Mullins.

Don’t Buy Until You Are Ready

You should not buy a set of clubs until you are ready to hit the course. Many beginners fork out a huge amount of money on a new set of clubs but then might find that they do not like the sport or the clubs are not quite right for them. Instead, get the basics down and then find a set of clubs that suits your style. In the meantime, you can borrow or hire clubs while you learn.

These tips should help any beginner to start to develop their abilities, build confidence and enjoy the great game of golf. Golf is a fantastic sport but it is also one which can be harder to start than others but one which is certainly worth persisting with.
