Following up from what many considered to be an underwhelming Suicide Squad movie this summer, Warner Bros. and DC Comics is segueing into a spin-off Harley Quinn solo movie, according to THR. Quinn’s portrayer, 26-year-old Aussie actress Margot Robbie, is slated to executive produce the film.
Robbie has reportedly signed a first-look deal with Warner Bros. to develop and produce feature films under her own LuckyChap Entertainment banner. She and LuckyChap are currently finishing up their debut movie film as producers, Terminal. Robbie has starred in other recent Warners films including The Legend of Tarzan and Focus.
Despite the criticism of Suicide Squad, not unlike Batman v Superman before it, the movie did end up raking in over $700 million worldwide for Warner Bros. Extending the franchise with a Harley Quinn spinoff leaves the door open for more potential Joker or Batman cameos in the film, and perhaps even other Squad members. It also gives DC Comics another female lead character to accompany Wonder Woman, whose solo film arrives in 2017.
This is another solo film for Warner and DC to capitalize on to expand their rising presence with heroes on the big screen. But following up from the concept of Suicide Squad, the Quinn movie will be focused on a villain, which makes this project even more compelling.
