Winning a singular Emmy Award, Grammy Award, Academy Award or Tony Award is nearly impossible for most. Furthermore, managing to win all four awards is almost unthinkable for most figures in the entertainment industry. However, a select few have managed to defy the odds and achieve what is called “EGOT” status. In recent years, Jennifer Hudson, John Legend and Whoopi Goldberg have accomplished this feat. Tonight, a new name was added to the list of “EGOT” winners — Viola Davis.
In a crowded field that included Jamie Foxx, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mel Brooks and Questlove, Viola Davis walked away with “Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording” honors. With this win, she has achieved “EGOT” status. Previously, she won “Best Supporting Actress” at the 2017 Academy Awards and “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series” at the 2015 Primetime Emmy Awards. Not to be forgotten, she won “Best Featured Actress in a Play” and “Best Leading Actress in a Play” at the Tony Awards in 2001 and 2010, respectively.
Viola Davis was on hand to grab the award as she stepped in to a new realm of entertainment history.
“Oh my god, I wrote this book to honor the six-year-old Viola,” she said about her Grammy Award-winning book, Finding Me.
“I just EGOT!”
The 65th Annual Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony continues on YouTube. The televised portion of the ceremony will kick off at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
