In the bottom of the 8th inning of a game with no score against a the division rival Tampa Bay Rays, Toronto Blue Jays’ third baseman Josh Donaldson made what will be up for one of the best catches of the year on David DeJesus to help keep a Marco Estrada perfect game in tact.
Joc Pederson, you have company.
It’s amazing how it seems like we see one incredible play after another nearly every day now. It’s tough to even say “the catch of the year” anymore because tomorrow there may be another one at a similar level of difficulty and athleticism. That’s not to take anything away from most likely the best third baseman in all of Major League Baseball right now in Josh Donaldson. This was an incredible “Jeter-like” play from the 29 year old. He flew into what looked like the third row in the stands and took out a young kid in the process.
Donaldson tweeted this after the game regarding the kid and the fan who kept him from falling face first into the seats:
Wanted to send a Shoutout to the Jays fan who saved my face. Also was told young jays fan was ok. He’s tough.

Good to hear that the kid is okay. Donaldson is arguably the Most Valuable Player in the American League in the first half of this season, and with this play, it further helps his case. The Blue Jays won the game 1-0 in 12 innings on a Chris Colabello home run. They are now 39-35, which is good enough for third place in the American League East, and just two games behind the Rays for first place.
