The High Point Panthers have announced that basketball Head Coach Tubby Smith has stepped down from the position. His son, G.G. Smith will serve as the Head Coach of the program for the remainder of this season and the 2022-2023 season. The program will evaluate the situation after that and moving forward. There was not a reason listed as to why he decided to step away from his coaching duties. Now his son will get a shot to coach the High Point Panthers.

Tubby Smith has a long history as a Head Coach in college basketball. He has coached for Tulsa, Georgia, Kentucky, Minnesota, Texas Tech, Memphis, and finally High Point. The move to High Point was significant because it is where he played college basketball himself. In his long-tenured career as a Head Coach, he amassed a career record of 642-369. He also won an NCAA Championship in 1998 with the Kentucky Wildcats.
This could very well mean retirement for Tubby Smith who has not been coaching for the Panthers for three weeks. Smith, who is 70, has had COVID-19 twice now and seems to be ready to move on from basketball. His son, G.G Smith was formerly the Head Coach at Loyola (MD). While coaching with Loyola (MD) he had a coaching record of 56-98 overall. He now takes over for his father in his second head coaching job.
If this is the retirement of Tubby Smith we here at Def Pen Sports wish him the best moving forward with his life beyond coaching college basketball.
