Thibodeau, the 2011 NBA Coach of the Year, last coached for the Minnesota Timberwolves, being fired by the team in January 2019. The Knicks parted ways with their previous head coach, David Fizdale, in December after a lackluster start to the season.
The Knicks had also previously linked to Hall of Fame point guard and current Los Angeles Lakers assistant coach Jason Kidd before ultimately settling on Thibodeau. The New York front office will hope that the changes to their coaching staff, as well as the recent changes in the front office, will help the Knicks get on a winning path.
Having their season end early following the NBA season suspension due to COVID-19, the Knicks ended the season with a record of 21-45, 12th in the Eastern Conference.
