Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye has contributed $1 million toward relief efforts in Ethiopia. His contributions will help those struggling during an ongoing conflict between the government in Addis Ababa and the Tigray region. In March, the New York Times issued a report that indicated Ethiopian officials are “leading a systematic campaign of ethnic cleansing” in the Tigray region. As a result, thousands have died and nearly two million people have been displaced.
“My heart breaks for my people of Ethiopia as innocent civilians ranging from small children to the elderly are being senselessly murdered and entire villages are being displaced out of fear and destruction,” the bestselling artist stated.
“I will be donating $1 million to provide 2 million meals through the United Nations World Food Programme and encourage those who can to please give as well.”
Over the last two years, The Weeknd has donated more than $2 million to social efforts. Last June, he offered $500,000 to front-line hospital workers in his hometown. Shortly thereafter, he donated another $500,000 to Black Lives Matter, National Bailout and the Know Your Rights Camp. Most recently, he offered $300,000 to those affected by the Beirut explosion in August.
