Terence Crawford has cemented his place in the boxing history books. On July 29, the Omaha native knocked down former unified champion Errol Spence Jr. en route to a ninth stoppage victory. With the win, he became the first undisputed welterweight champion of the four-belt era. In addition, he became the first male boxer to win undisputed titles in two weight classes during the four-belt era. Now, he’s looking to find his next challenge. While it’s unclear when it will happen, it appears that he has his sights set on the 154-pound division and its undisputed champion — Jermell Charlo. Unlike his relationship with Spence Jr., Crawford appears to have a strong distaste for Charlo. During a recent conversation with former world champion Shawn Porter, the undisputed welterweight titlist explained why he dislikes his fellow undisputed world champion.
“I don’t like Jermell for the simple fact that I feel he’s a fake individual,” Crawford said.
“I feel Errol is real, I feel he’s genuine. I feel he stands on ten toes on everything that he says or does. I feel like Jermell is just, you know, one of those guys that do a lot for attention.”
Crawford may not like Charlo, but he appears to respect his skill as a boxer. He doesn’t expect Jermell Charlo to jump up two weight classes and beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, but he does think that he’ll do better than most people think when they meet in September.
“I got Canelo. I think it’s gonna be a good fight, I think a lot of people are sleeping on Charlo,” he told Charlamagne Tha God and DJ Envy of The Breakfast Club.
“He’s skillful. I think Charlo’s got the boxing skills to make it a competitive fight.”
