Less than a year ago, Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño put on a performance for the ages. In an all-out war, the two champions landed severe power shots over the course of 12 rounds. Unfortunately, both men walked away without a definitive answer to the following question: who is the undisputed men’s super welterweight champion? Tonight, the two fighters went out to California to get the answer they’ve been searching for.
Much like the first fight, Jermell Charlo and Brian Castaño put it all on the line. Through the first three rounds, Charlo was able to land the cleaner shots, fight a bit from the outside and control the tempo. In rounds four through six, Castaño put the pedal to metal and began to force the issue on the inside. However, Charlo was able to make a few adjustments in the final four rounds and drop Castaño twice in the 10th round. Ultimately, the referee was forced to stop the bout.
The men’s 154-pound division has crowned its first undisputed champion, but there are still a number of exciting bouts on the horizon. Most notably, the winner of the upcoming Terrence Crawford-Errol Spence Jr. bout could move up and challenge Charlo. Additionally, undefeated 154-pound contenders Sebastian Fundora and Tim Tszyu are also looking for a shot at the title. Not to mention, veterans like Danny Garcia, Tony Harrison and Erickson Lubin loom.
As for Castaño, the same is true. There are a number of exciting fights in the super welterweight division. Also, there are a number of exciting fights available in the 160-pound division. Middleweights like Ryota Murata, Erislandy Lara and Chris Eubank Jr. are all looking for opponents this fall.
This weekend of boxing is complete. Next week, David Benavidez, Chantelle Cameron and Janibek Alimkhanuly will all be in action.
