When two artist who come from different backgrounds like Star & Joel do, the pairing makes you wonder how did it come about. Well when there is a common goal set forth like the one this duo set forth, the origins of how they linked up explains itself when you check out the music. Star who hails from Birmingham, Alabama teamed up with Joel who is originally from Nashville, Tennessee to deliver the joint effort, ‘Colors’. Immediately through the artwork itself, you should get the idea that this 5 track EP is here to deliver a message, one that is still relevant whether you want to go back a couple 100 years or a couple 100 days. The subject matter is touchy but when you trace back the origins of Hip-Hop and what it was created for, speaking your mind and expressing yourself through this art form shouldn’t be frowned upon. Only in certain instances, of course.
As for ‘Colors’ the EP, each record displays the abilities each artist has to approach a topic, one that is relevant and applies to not just themselves but those who can relate when they press play. I would say the points they are trying to get across were well received on my end and I don’t regret giving this project a thorough listen as there is always a time and place for conscious rap, if that is what I can properly categorize this as. I say that to say this Star and Joel definitely focused on a number of cultural differences which confronted real issues in today’s world. A positive message amongst all this negative in the world is always needed.
