The Raiders are preparing for the 2018 season with new head coach Jon Gruden, which Smith was apparently not apart of. Cutting Smith also saves a good chunk of salary, the Raiders are saving roughly $8.5 on the books.
Sean Smith signed a massive four-year $40 million contract, which included $20 million in guaranteed money. Smith never fully filled the expectations of that contract. He dealt with quite a few benchings over the last two years even being ranked 76 out of CB’s on Pro Football Focus.
There were plenty of other reasons for this split as well most importantly is the legal issues Smith currently faces. Sean Smith is expected to accept a plea deal to serve one year in prison after a felony assault charge was brought against him the LA Times reported. Smith will also serve three-years probation after it, which is a blessing considering he was facing a full 7-years for the charge.
