New Orleans arguably has the most talented roster in the league. Dallas has a bit of a throwback style in that they still use the run game to set up the pass and lean heavily on a stout defense. Though the Cowboys have opened things up a bit recently, you’d think something has to give when it comes to two teams playing each other with totally different styles and game plans. At this point in the season, even though they’re on the road, it’s hard to go against the team with only one loss.
Featured Pick #1: How many points will be scored total? (Over 55)
New Orleans is averaging close to 40 points per game (37.2 to be exact). If they reach that, then you’d have to take the over here. Any game the Saints play in has a chance to become a shootout. Likewise, any game the Saints play in has a chance to be a blowout. But if New Orleans puts up their average point total, all it would take for the Cowboys is to get into the end zone twice.
The Saints defense gets a lot of credit. And deservingly so. But they’re only allowed to be as good as they are because the offense is so dominant if that makes sense. In other words: When a team has the top-ranked offense, a league-average defense seems awesome. Which they are. New Orleans is 15th in points allowed. And most of the time it is. But football can be a weird game. It giveth and taketh away. New Orleans’ offense is so good it takes away from the defense. Because so many games border on getting out of hand that the defense can just sit back in prevent and give up easy yards. That lessens the defense’s value in terms of league ranking.
Dallas has the ability to keep it close. Or, they have the ability to keep scoring on a defense allowing easy yards because it’s a two-score game. The Cowboys have been playing very well. But they might run into a buzzsaw here. Either way, there should be points aplenty.
Featured Pick #2: Will there be a post-touchdown celebration involving three or more players? (Yes)
With reduced risk of penalty on touchdown celebrations comes the risk of stepping over the line. But NFL players have really kept that in check. To a surprising extent, actually. Instead, they’ve opted for clean, fun entertainment. And often, that’s involved getting their teammates involved.
Plus, we’ve got Michael Thomas involved in this one. The same guy who made headlines by re-creating the Joe Horn flip-phone-under-the-goal-post celebration. Obviously, it’s a prime time game. If you want to pick it apart, this question comes down to who will score more than anything else.
Last weekend, we saw the Vikings use Adam Thielen as a limbo bar. Group photos have also become something of a fashionable thing after a turnover or score. If Michael Thomas gets into the end zone, this is a lock. He’s got something up his sleeve for this one. If he doesn’t, you might have to sweat this one out a little. Either way, getting more than three players involved in a touchdown celebration feels like a cool thing to root for.
Featured Pick #3: Who will win the game? (Saints by 13+)
When the New Orleans offense is on the field against the Dallas defense, that’s going to be the best part(s) of this one. The Cowboys have allowed the third fewest points in the league. And Drew Brees is on a torrid, MVP-level pace.
The Saints have weapons all over their offense. The Cowboys are solid all over with some star power in the defense. It’s strength versus strength. But you’d have to think the New Orleans offense wins out. They just seem to have an answer for everything. And if the Saints can go up and down the field, it’s over. Dallas can’t keep pace from a points-scoring standpoint.
To have the best chance to win, Dallas needs to slow down the pace, run the ball, and keep the New Orleans offense off the field. But even that might not be enough. Maintaining ball control can be a tricky situation. You still need to score at the end of those drives. Touchdowns, not field goals.
This one might be settled by which team controls the pace. Usually, the home team has a slight advantage in that category going in. But in a dome, Drew Brees rules all. Even on the road, the Saints should manage to turn this into a track meet. And that doesn’t bode well for Dallas.
