The news of Hunter’s signing was originally reported by Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle on Saturday.
After a strong career at Georgia State, Hunter was selected 28th overall in the 2015 NBA Draft by the Boston Celtics.
Hunter didn’t stick in Boston and was waived in October 2016 after averaging 2.7 points per game and shooting 36.7 percent from the field
Shortly after being waived by the Celtics, he was signed by Chicago, but played just three games (nine total minutes) for the Bulls before he was waived.
Hunter was a 3-point specialist in college but has shot just 29.7 percent from deep over the course of his brief career – albeit on a relatively small sample of shots (64).
Hunter, 24, is a shooter, the sort of player that the Rockets love. If he can shoot consistently, which he hasn’t yet shown he can do at the NBA level, he might just stick around in Houston. The odds are slim, however. The Rockets are the second-best team in the NBA, and have a deep and talented roster.
Hunter’s two-way contract means that he can go back and forth between the Rockets and the G League.
