Anytime somebody suffers a gruesome leg injury, people mention Joe Theismann. While it is often not a very accurate comparison, today was a different story. In today’s week 11 matchup between the Washington Redskins and the Houston Texans, Alex Smith suffered a broken fibula. It looked very similar to Joe Theismann’s leg injury that ended his career. Strangely enough, today was the 33 year anniversary of Theismann’s infamous broken leg. Theismann was also in attendance and tweeted about Smith’s injury.

The Redskins traded for Smith when they decided it was time to move on from Kirk Cousins this offseason. Alex Smith was drafted first overall in the 2005 NFL draft. 2017 Alex Smith seemed to revive his career in Kansas City with a newfound ability to drive the ball downfield. Smith helped lead the Redskins to an NFC East-leading 6-3 start. With Smith out for the season, the NFC East is now wide open and will be wide open and will be interesting to see who comes out on top.
