The month of January is slowly dwindling down with just a few days left. Ushering in the month of February, several brands have a lot of special releases lined up for their respective product whether it be for footwear, apparel or accessories. You name it they are all doing their best to show respect and celebrate Black History Month.
As for the folks at PUMA, they have a special Black History Month Pack scheduled to release in February which not only celebrates the history of African American culture; past, present and future but they decided to let this collection pay it’s respects to Olympic athlete and brand ambassador, Tommie Smith. The collection features not just one sneaker but three different silhouettes to choose from, as well as apparel.
As you can see from the accompanied pictures we have two variations of the PUMA Suede Classic and one of the PUMA Sky II High. While one of the Suede Classics is mostly black, the graphic print design can be seen right beside the PUMA form strip and for the other, the graphic print is seen throughout. The Sky II High on the other hand features a combination of both, black being the dominant focal point on the upper but the form strip takes on the graphic print. The highlight on all three sneakers is Tommie Smith’s silhouette on the tongues which was birthed back in 1968.
Not too familiar with Mr. Smith? Here’s more information in regards to how he has become an iconic figure;
During the 1968 games, Tommie Smith made history by winning the 200m sprint in under 20 seconds. While stepping onto the medal podium to receive his honor, Tommie removed his PUMA Suedes to reveal black socks representing poverty and slavery. He then proceeded to raise his fist – “to stand up for human rights and to stand up for black Americans.” With that gesture and with that moment Tommie altered history and began to dedicate his life to change.
The pack will be available at The PUMA Lab Powered by Foot Locker, Sheikh Shoes and Villa among other national retailers.
