Netflix may have canceled Daredevil, and the majority of their other Marvel shows, last month but fans haven’t given up yet. On Friday, Vincent D’Onofrio, who plays Kingpin in the series, tweeted out a link to a Change.org petition to save the show. After that, the petition doubled in signatures in under 24 hours and now sits at 97,424 signatures. The petition’s goal is 150,000 signatures.
Fans were caught off guard last year when Marvel and Netflix announced they were canceling the series shortly after releasing the third season to rave reviews. The two companies also announced the cancelation of the rest of their Marvel shows except for The Punisher, which is also expected to be canceled after its second season releases later this month. Fans weren’t the only ones surprised by the cancelation though, as series stars Charlie Cox and Amy Rutberg both voiced in recent interviews.
“A lot of us really expected to keep going, and I certainly did,” said Cox, who plays the titular hero. “The truth is, I felt like we had a lot of stories to tell, and although I understand [the cancellation], I’m very saddened by that. It’s just how business works.”
Rutberg, who plays Marcie Stahl, also noted her surprise and confusion. “My contacts at Marvel were very surprised. Any of the rumors that it was a Marvel decision are wrong, I think it was purely a Netflix decision. That comes from personal conversations with people high up at Marvel. They were surprised.”
Neither Marvel or Netflix have officially commented on the petition yet but similar petitions and fan-led campaigns have ‘saved’ multiple shows in recent years. And, if Rutberg is correct, then Marvel could certainly be open to continuing the series, especially with Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+, set to launch later this year.
