A legal battle is brewing within the world of music and one of music’s most revered albums is at the center of the feud. As reported by Page Six, legendary producer Pete Rock is threatening to sue Nas if he isn’t paid royalties pertaining to his work on Illmatic. The report suggests that Pete Rock and his legal team cut a deal worth “millions” that would get previously unpaid royalties for his work on “The World Is Yours.” However, Pete Rock and his associates claim they haven’t heard from Nas or his team since then.
“Nas and his people have stonewalled me since 1994; My New Year’s resolution is to be compensated for my hard work on Illmatic,” Pete Rock told Page Six.
Released in 1994, “The World Is Yours” is widely considered one of the greatest rap songs ever made. Not only did the track earn a gold plaque, but it has also been sampled by Jay-Z, Eminem and countless others. While Nas is the front facing artist on the track, Pete Rock is credited as both a producer and songwriter.
Nas nor his attorneys have publicly commented on the matter as of yet.
