The New England Patriots are still waiting to find out if Tom Brady’s 4 game suspension will stand. In case Brady’s suspension remains 4 games the team has built a little insurance policy in signing Matt Flynn. ESPN first reported the news, as the team has also released quarterback Garrett Gilbert in a corresponding move.
After spending 6 seasons in Green Bay (1 With Oakland and Seattle), the Packers made no effort in bringing him back to the Frozen Tundra. With Scott Tolzien already on the roster Flynn’s fate was sealed when the team selected UCLA’s Brett Hundley in the 5th round of this year’s draft.
New England obviously doesn’t plan on starting Flynn but his veteran presence could be valuable during Brady’s absence. With Jimmy Garoppolo starting against the Steelers Week 1, Flynn becomes the backup quarterback. The Patriots may have been interested in Tarvaris Jackson but he decided to rejoin the Seahawks.
