Jerod Mayo will become the next head coach of the New England Patriots. He is the first Black coach to fill the position in the franchise’s 65-year history.
“It’s a new era in New England: the Patriots have hired Jerod Mayo as their next head coach and he will be formally introduced at a press conference next week,” Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted.
Mayo has spent his entire professional career with the Patriots. New England selected the University of Tennessee standout with the tenth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. During eight seasons in the NFL, he was selected to one All-Pro team, appeared in two Pro Bowls and won a Super Bowl. After spending his entire career with the New England Patriots, he became joined the team’s coaching staff in 2019.
Mayo will step into his first head coaching role after the franchise parted ways with Bill Belichick. In 24 seasons, Belichick won seven championships and finished with a record of 333-178.
“We had a vision of building a championship football team that has exceeded my wildest dreams and expectations,” Belichick said.
“I’m very proud of that. I’ll always have those great memories, will carry those with me the rest of my life.”
