When you think of Halloween you think of orange and black, no? Okay well with this countdown I wanted to bring a new twist to the table than the typical gruesome “title to post” association you would have expected. Yes I know its Halloween and thats what you should get but let me get more into detail here. After watching the hit show “Orange is the New Black” on Netflix I already knew I would have to try to tie that title into a Halloween themed countdown based off the two colors. Only problem was how.
First I looked up what exactly does the colors orange and black represent and came up with us this.
Orange represents enthusiasm, fascination, happiness, creativity, determination, attraction, success, encouragement, and stimulation. (This next point keep in mind, its key to the countdown) Orange has very high visibility, so you can use it to catch attention and highlight the most important elements of your design (No wonder Nike associates with orange).
Now for the color black. Black is associated with power, elegance, formality, death, evil, and mystery. Black is a mysterious color associated with fear and the unknown(key point here, take notes!). Black denotes strength and authority; it is considered to be a very formal, elegant, and prestigious color. In heraldry, black is the symbol of grief.
SO.. with that being said the title “Orange is the New Black” to me represents the color orange and everything it stood for now being equivalent to black. It no longer carries the symbolism it was set out to behold. If you watch the show the symbolism that black carries as a color is how the characters (especially Chapman) carry themselves wearing the orange jumpsuits, adapting to a new “character” they have to become in order to survive or fit in. I could go on and on about the characters and their lives being associated to the “Orange is the New Black” definition but I rather you guys go check out the show for yourself.
Now this brings me to the main case in point, Halloween creates this idea of celebration of being something or someone you are not on your regular day to day living. (i.e the show, or why we are here sneakers in colorways you wouldn’t normally see that are suitable for Halloween)
Now when you tie together the definition for orange, black and the meaning for Halloween so to speak you have a twisted combination(things you would not normally see, again) for colorways and sneakers that should DEFinitely be worn for Halloween.
