Shortly after ESPN debuted its documentary exploring the realm of street ball in New York, Showtime plans to return to the black top with its latest documentary. Executive produced by Kevin Durant and Rich Kleiman, NYC Point Gods will dissect the city’s ability to develop great point guards. Along the way, Durant and Kleiman highlight a number of New York natives, including Kenny “The Jet” Smith, Mark Jackson and Stephon Marbury.
“Against the backdrop of New York City’s epidemic of drugs and crime in the 1980s and 1990s, a unique style of basketball emerged on the city’s courts defined by toughness, talent and swagger. Fashion and a fusion with hip-hop converged with basketball to change the game forever,” the trailer’s description reads.
“Legends were born on playgrounds, high school gyms and in community centers. Names like Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith, Dwayne ‘Pearl’ Washington, Mark Jackson and Stephon Marbury made famous a style of ball that forever changed the game.”
NYC Point Gods is set to hit Showtime on July 29, 2022. Check out the complete trailer below.
