News broke today that former Seton Hall Pirate’s guard Myles Powell is suing the school, Head Coach Kevin Willard, and one other member of the program’s staff. The lawsuit is centered around Powell’s claim that the school staff failed to diagnose a knee injury during his senior year. The failure to do so caused him to suffer severe physical damage along with financial damage. This lawsuit further alleges that this injury was discovered later by NBA teams and prevented him from being drafted in the 2020 NBA Draft.

The University was tight-lipped about the lawsuit but did release the following statement about the issue: “Seton Hall University has always and continues to put the health and safety of our students first, we are aware of the matter, but are unable to comment on pending litigation.” The beginning of the injury is said to be on November ninth of the 2019-20 season against Stony Brook. Staff examined the injury and determined it was an ankle injury that wouldn’t be further injuries by playing on it. There are also allegations of “pain killers” being injected into Powell’s knee so he could continue to play all with Willard’s knowledge.
These are some serious allegations from the Pirate’s third all-time leading scorer. This civil suit has four charges attached to it. These charges include negligence, breach of contract, and breach of fiduciary duty causing severe and permanent injury. That last line includes physical pain, emotional distress, and monetary damages. This will continue to play out in the legal system and hopefully, some kind of answers come to light. The facts we do know are that Powell went undrafted, but the reasons are unclear at the moment.
