21 home runs by LA Dodgers Joc Pederson to open it up! Followed up by 29 home runs from Toronto Blue Jays rookie Vladimir Guerrero Jr., in his first four minutes of his first home run derby. This amazing feat broke a record for most home runs in a single round!
The 2019 Home Run Derby also produced not one, but two swing-offs for the first time ever with another record broken with 40 dingers from Vladdy in round two! Two rookies in the finals! New York Mets rookie sensation Pete Alonso and Guerrero Jr. The two would square off for a prize worth more than their salaries for this season.
All of the competitors had good days, blasting baseballs onto the concourse and beyond the fences, Christian Yelich was originally slated to be involved but had to back out due to a last-minute back injury. The 2019 Home Run Derby brought a plethora of rookies to the plate which made for quite the show, especially with the immense power shown by Alonso, Guerrero Jr., and the others!
22 home runs to set the tone from Vladdy on a night where he hit plenty of absolute bombs. Legendary number 23 home runs to win $1 million dollars, as Alonso walks it off to take the win. Alonso wins the 2019 T-Mobile Home Run Derby and spoils Guerrero Jr’s record-shattering 91 total home runs!
Fun fact Alonso’s salary this year $555,000 with the Mets, but his winnings from tonight $1 million! Alonso set records coming into the derby with 30 home runs before the break. A Mets franchise record. But tonight will still go down as… Alonso wins the derby, but Vladdy won the night! Alonso has quite the bright future ahead of him and tonight’s victory shows just how bright it can be.
