While Master P has made an absolute fortune in the music industry, the 46-year old rapper knows a thing or two about basketball as well. New Orleans native Percy Miller, better known by his stage name Master P, played basketball throughout his childhood and excelled at it, eventually landing two NBA contracts for short periods of time, one with the Hornets and one with the Toronto Raptors.
Miller never even played one real NBA minute as he was cut in the preseason both times he agreed to a contract but he claims to still know his basketball. In fact, he has so much faith in his basketball knowledge and prowess that he believes he can operate as an assistant coach at the professional level as a member of the New Orleans Pelicans coaching staff. Following from TMZ Sports:
“They need me to be an assistant coach,” he said. “I’m serious about coaching.”
We’ve seen a few celebrities get involved in sports at the professional level such as the NBA, usually at the owner position. When a celebrity flirts with the idea of entering the NBA front office scene, most of the time the plans are left unfulfilled. With Master P having plenty of previous basketball experience and even minimal amounts at the NBA level, he may be willing to actually pursue a coaching job somewhere in the association.
Of course, Miller would love to work for his hometown New Orleans Pelicans but the franchise seems to have enough on its plate right now.
The Pelicans are reaching the conclusion of quite the disappointing campaign in which they missed the playoffs, despite adding superstar big DeMarcus Cousins at the trade deadline. With the Cousins-Davis combo getting off to a rocky start and Boogie having the ability to leave this summer in free agency, the Pelicans surely have bigger things on their mind than bringing Master P aboard as an assistant coach.
