Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali has landed his “dream role” as legendary boxer Jack Johnson in the HBO limited series, Unruly.
Led by Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, the series will take heed from the Emmy winning PBS documentary, Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson. Written by Dominique Morisseau, Unruly will tell the story of Jack Johnson, the first Black Heavyweight Boxing Champion. Along the way, Morisseau will tell the story of Johnson’s rise, fall, defiance, resilience and much more.
Unruly is Ali’s latest work. He will star in Marvel’s Blade as well as Apple TV+’s Swan Song.
As for HBO, this lmited series will continue their fruitful relationship Ali previously put together a documentary series for HBO called We Have a Dream: The Kids of the Oakland MLK Oratorical Fest. Most notably, he starred in season three of True Detective. This time around, he’ll not only act, but he will also executive the new HBO series alongside his wife, Amatus Karim Ali.
