Lamorne Morris might be heading to Hulu soon. According to Variety, Morris’ pilot, Woke, is nearing a series order at the streamer. Hulu first ordered the pilot last November.
The series is a live-action/animation hybrid based on the life and art of prolific cartoonist Keith Knight. Morris plays Keef, a cartoonist in San Francisco on the cusp hitting it big. However, everything changes thanks to an unforeseen incident (I would state what it is but unfortunately, that’s all we know for now, plotwise.)
Knight himself co-wrote the series with Marshall Todd, best known for writing Barbershop. Both men are also set to serve as executive producers alongside Will Gluck, Richie Schwartz, Eric Christian Olsen, and Katie Schumaecker. Ayesha Carr is attached as showrunner while Mo Marable directed the pilot. The Sony Pictures Production has yet to be officially picked up but it’s apparently only a matter of time.
This isn’t Knight’s first semi-biographical work. The artist previously shared his story in comic strips such as The K Chronicles, (th)ink, and The Knight Life. Ever the socially conscious cartoonist, Knight has used his cartoons to take aim at a myriad of social issues over the years.
Long seen as Netflix’s goofy younger brother, Hulu has taken big steps over the last few years. The Handmaid’s Tale, which was recently renewed for a fourth season, launched the service into the stratosphere as it raked in Emmy noms. They also acquired Fox’s The Orville over the summer. And then there’s that Disney+/ESPN+/Hulu bundle looming on the horizon, ready to take the streaming world by storm.
If Woke is picked up to series, expect the first season sometime in 2020.
