On Monday American Horror Story fans finally got to see something substantial from the show’s upcoming ninth season. Other than a few short clips teasing the 80s slasher vibe and a release date, not much was known about the upcoming season. The big question on many fans’ minds was whether the departure of series stalwart Sarah Paulson would hurt the quality.
And, thought the trailer is short, it seems like AHS: 1984 is set to continue the high watermark set by previous seasons. Starring Emma Roberts as an anxious new camp counselor with a dark, mysterious past. That falls to the wayside though as a terrifying serial killer known as Mr. Jingles haunts the camp, slashing throats and taking names.

The new season is something of a departure for the series, or a return to form depending on who you ask. The last couple of seasons featured a highly serialized narrative, bringing together events and characters together from the show’s various seasons. That all culminated in last year’s hit-or-miss eighth season, Apocalypse. AHS: 1984 looks like it’s going the opposite direction, with little to no connection to other seasons.
Roberts is the cornerstone of the new season’s cast as it features mostly fresh faces to the Ryan Murphy creation. Matthew Morrison, Billie Lourd, Cody Fern, and Leslie Grossman will star alongside Roberts. Gus Kenworthy, Angelica Ross, DeRon Horton, Zach Villa, and John Carroll Lynch are also set to appear.
American Horror Story: 1984 premieres September 18th on FX.
