Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson will take the field at MetLife Stadium on Sunday without the insurance of a long-term contract. Instead, Jackson will play the final year of his contract for $23 million.
“Despite best efforts on both sides, we were unable to reach a contract extension with Lamar Jackson,” Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta stated.
“We greatly appreciate how he has handled this process and we are excited about our team with Lamar leading the way. We will continue to work towards a long-term contract after the season, but for now, we are looking forward to a successful 2022 campaign.”
Lamar Jackson is one of three starting quarterbacks expecting to receive a new deal in the offseason. Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow also expect to negotiate new deals before playing out the final years of their contracts.
In the meantime, Lamar Jackson will lead the Ravens into a week one matchup against the New York Jets. The Ravens will follow up their showdown in New York with a game against the Miami Dolphins in Baltimore. From there, Jackson and company will head out on a three-game run that includes the Patriots, Bills and Bengals.
Jackson is hoping to bounce back after a disappointing end to the 2021-2022 NFL season. After leading the Ravens to an 8-5 record, he suffered an ankle injury in Week 14 that would sideline him for the remainder of the season. Baltimore lost the last four games of the season and missed the playoffs. However, Jackson was named to the Pro Bowl for the second time in his career.
