The term ‘max deal’ is thrown around very often. Seriously if you average 20 points a game, grab a few boards and dish a few assists, you will most likely be offered a max contract. Lucky for DeMar DeRozan eh?
But really, how the hell is DeMar DeRozan going to get offered the same money that Kevin Durant is most likely going to get? Doesn’t that seem a tad backwards? I’d understand if the Lakers wanted to give KD max but DeMar?! I’m sorry but that stinks of desperation.
That starts with DeRozan, a lock to decline his option and hit free agency this summer. A bunch of teams, including DeRozan’s hometown Lakers, are prepared to offer him a max deal starting at $25 million per season, and the Raptors know they will have to spend big to keep him.
I think this depends on DeMar and his loyalty to Toronto. He has said several times that he loves Toronto “yada yada yada”. But what if they crash out of the Playoffs in the first round yet again? Will he sit there and go ‘I need a change’? And what about Toronto? Can they afford to lose DeRozan? I think not. And because the Lakers are prepared to offer max, Toronto might have to call the Lakers raise and let DeRozan decide.
