Brooklyn’s own Kota The Friend is back at it, yet again. This time around, the New York artist has teamed up with Statik Selektah for a new album. To Kill A Sunrise is a 10-track showcase of the Brookly native’s growth as an artist. It’s also the product of an uncertain time. In a recent interview with Fast Company, he explained that he created the majority of this project during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Quarantine really revealed myself to me,” he said.
“I feel like 2021 has definitely been about correcting the things that I’ve realized about myself and the incorrect ways that I was living.”
To Kill A Sunrise has a similar tone to past releases, but it has a much different inspiration. He also says that this project was partially inspired by the movie Soul from Pixar.
“That movie changed my life. I watched it probably about 30 times,” he said.
“It’s easy to get caught in, what should I be doing? That anxiety comes from that same thing that I learned from Soul. It’s not about what I should be doing. It’s about what you do already. You don’t have to search for what you should be doing. I felt that.”
