Kantemir Balagov has been tapped to direct the highly-anticipated, The Last Of Us, series at HBO. Initially, Chernobyl’s Johan Renck was set to direct the pilot. Instead, the Russian native will bring his expertise to the project.
The Last Of Us is based on the popular video game series in which modern civilization is destroyed. Joel, a smuggler, is tasked with removing a 14-year-old girl from an oppressive quarantine zone because she may be key to curing a pandemic in this new world. As they travel across the country, the two must rely on each other to survive.
Sony Pictures is set to work on this project alongside PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint, and Naughty Dog. Evan Wells, Carolyn Strauss, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan will help produce the series.
Thus far, HBO nor Sony have shared any updates on a production schedule or casting decisions.
