Julianna Peña entered the cage on Saturday as a massive underdog against bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes. However, she dared to defy the odds and she emerged victorious. Peña took the fight to Nunes from the opening seconds and managed to submit her in the second round.
In the wake of this massive upset, the world of mixed martial arts was left in shock. Heading into the fight, Nunes boasted a 12-fight win streak that included wins against Ronda Rousey and Cristiane “Cyborg” Venâncio.
“She didn’t just beat Nunes. She didn’t even have hooks in. She broke Nunes. We live in bizzaro world, now,” WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion Shayna Baszler tweeted.
“Since Tyson first went down, I’m not sure I’ve ever been more shocked by an upset than I was by Amanda Nunes suddenly losing to Juliana Pena – and Amanda not seeming that upset about it,” Undisputed host Skip Bayless added.
A rematch is coming, but tonight is Peña’s to enjoy.
