Each and every day, publicists, label reps and artists send their music to Def Pen, XXL, Rap-Up, Billboard, HotNewHipHop and several other media outlets. Not to mention, teams send their artist’s work to COLORS, NPR’s Tiny Desk and many other performance platforms. Through all of that, some artists show promise and are given a feature, some are overlooked and find a way to succeed anyway and others fade away to find a new living. With all of that said, the artists that usually stick are the ones that organically find their way into your playlists.
Nearly a month ago, I was strolling through my YouTube Music recommendations when I stumbled upon a trio of artists with completely different sounds, Reggie, AG Club and Joy Oladokun. The latter of the three has a soothing voice that could either help you peacefully meditate or accompany you on a late-night drive by the beach. From the moment, I heard “Breathe Again,” I was hooked. Every now and then, an artist reminds me why I write about music. This time, it’s Joy Oladokun.
Oladukon is a singer, songwriter and all-around musician from Arizona that now resides in Nashville, Tennessee. As a first-generation, Black, queer folk artist, the Arizona native pulls from life experiences and emotions to create music that is powerfully honest and relatable. Over the last few years, Joy has gained fans through features on SoFar Sounds, NPR, NBC’s This Is Us and The L Word. Most recently, Joy appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Coming off an incredible performance on national television, the Nashville resident has teamed up with Jensen McRae to release the “Wish You The Best” video. Simple but beautiful, the video finds Oladukon sitting in the backseat of a pickup truck riding by the countryside. Then, we find Jense McRae in the car singing about past memories. Together, we receive the “Wish You The Best” video. Check it out below.
