After hitting a mid-summer lull, boxing action has picked back up this weekend with fights featuring Vergil Ortiz Jr., Joshua Franco and Andre Moloney. Through all of the fights that took place on August 14, one fight seemingly capture every boxing fan’s attention, John Riel Casimero-Guillermo Rigondeaux
For much of his career, Rigondeaux possessed a defensive style that won fights, but did not necessarily entertain casual fans. As he’s gotten older, he’s shifted his style a bit and opted to fight in close quarters a bit more. Heading into a title fight against Casimero, many expected tough exchanges and fireworks. Unfortunately, that did not take place. Instead, Rigondeaux reverted back to his more defensive style as Casimero followed him around the ring. By the end of the fight, neither fight landed more than nine punches in a single round.
Casimero emerged victorious on Saturday with a split decision victory against Rigondeaux. The judges seemingly rewarded Casimero for being the aggressor while Rignodeaux worked to do the opposite. Moving forward, Casimero will look to unify titles in the bantamweight division with fights against either Nonito Donaire or Naoya Inoue.
