Jimmy Kimmel was the talk of the town during the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards despite not taking home an actual award. During the awards ceremony, Quinta Brunson took home her first Emmy Award after winning the “Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series” category. As part of a bit, Kimmel lay on the ground near the microphone as Brunson delivered her acceptance speech. Immediately thereafter, the late-night talk show received backlash from those online and in Hollywood for his actions.
“I was like, ‘I wish that man would just get up off of the ground.’ And then I realized it was Jimmy Kimmel, and I was like, ‘Ooh, the disrespect, Jimmy!’ But that’s just me,” Emmy Award Winner Sheryl Lee Ralph said, according to Variety.
Days after the initial incident occurred, Kimmel and Brunson discussed the matter on Jimmy Kimmel Live! He called his decision to lay on the ground a “dumb comedy skit.”
“People said I stole your moment and maybe I did, and I’m sorry I did do that,” Kimmel told Brunson.
“It’s very kind of you to say that. Honestly, I was in such a moment of having a good time. I won my first Emmy! I was up there like, you know, happy! And I was wrapped up in the moment, just having a good time,” Brunson replied.
The two went on to discuss her first Emmy Award win and the upcoming season of her hit show. Season two of Abbott Elementary is set to debut on September 21, 2022.
