Months after securing the undisputed super middleweight championship, Jermell Charlo has reportedly found his next opponent. Mike Coppinger of ESPN has reported that Charlo will defend his title against Tim Tszyu in January 2023. With the fight still months away from taking place, it is still unclear where it will take place. However, it is clear that Premier Boxing Champions will handle the fight along with Showtime and FOX.
At 32 years old, Charlo will seemingly enter the fight at his peak. In May, the Houston native became the first boxer to win the men’s undisputed super middleweight title after stopping Brian Castaño in the 10th round. Despite detractors and naysayers, he has also cemented his place in the pound-for-pound rankings with victories over Tony Harrison, Erickson Lubin, Jeison Rosario and Austin Trout. Now, he’ll put his skills to the test against the next generation of super middleweight contenders.
Charlo’s opponent, Tim Tszyu, will enter the bout with a perfect record of 21-0 with 15 knockouts. He made his U.S. debut in March at the Armory in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Tszyu earned a unanimous decision against Terrell Gausha and put himself in title contention. This January, he’ll put it all on the line for a shot at greatness.
