The Miami Dolphins made a move today that allows them to keep one of their star players for at least another season. Their star wide receiver Jarvis Landry was franchise tagged by the team today. The team announced the news on Twitter.

Landry’s franchise tag means that he will stick with the Dolphins for another year while each side continues to work towards a long-term extension. His pay will be equal what the average annual pay for the top five highest paid receivers in the league, which means Landry will bring home somewhere around $16 million this upcoming season.
Landry was drafted by the Dolphins in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. He quickly became a favorite target of Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill. Landry has caught for over 1,000 yards two out of his four years in the league, and almost had a third this year. His stats this included 987 receiving yards on 112 catches as well as 9 receiving touchdowns.
This past season did not go as planned for the Dolphins. The troubles started during training camp when Tannehill having his ACL surgically repaired. The Dolphins quickly signed Jay Cutler, who put up average numbers this past season and lead the team to a 6-10 record.
Landry has been a cornerstone for the Dolphins offense since he was drafted. Receiver Devante Parker was supposed to be the number one target but his potential has been weighted down by injuries. Losing Landry, at least not without gaining something in return, is not an option for the Dolphins at this time. Time will see if a long-term deal can be worked out between the two sides.
