Few sister duos are doing it quite like the Chlöe and Halle Bailey. Over the last 12 months, Chlöe Bailey has appeared in Prime Video’s Swarm, starred in Peacock’s Praise This, delivered her first solo project, went on tour and performed at Broccoli City Festival. Meanwhile, her sister, Halle, has become the first Black woman to lead a live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Now, she’s back to begin her run as a solo act with a new track called “Angel.”
Halle Bailey pulls no punches and hides no scars in her debut solo single. Produced by Ron “Neff-U” Feemster, the piano-driven effort finds the critically-acclaimed vocalist singing passionately about the struggles she’s faced as a young Black woman finding her place in the world. The way in which her voice bends and pleads embodies the lyrical tone of the track. From verse to verse, she talks about her insecurities and the doubts she has, but finds strength in her beauty and ability to push through.
“Do you ever make it out of your head? Do you still swim in your thoughts? Do you still mistake your flaws for property? Somethin’ that just [doesn’t] sit right with you, but heaven knows. Heaven knows,” she sings.
“Your wings can’t weigh you down, but angels make a way somehow. If we fall, we fall on clouds.”
