As expected, Saturday’s battle between Gervonta Davis and Rolando Romero did not go to the judges. After taking the lead on at least two judge’s scorecards through five rounds, Gervonta Davis landed a check left hook in the sixth round to send Romero stumbling to the canvas. Romero was able to get to his feet, but the referee ultimately made the decision to stop the bout before Davis could capitalize off of the punch.
“The crazy thing is that I didn’t even throw it that hard. He just ran into it. He just ran into it. Something like when Pacquiao got caught. I didn’t even throw it that hard and he’s the one who ran into it, when he was talking that it was going to be me,” Davis said about the punch that ended the fight.
With the victory, Davis improves to 27-0 with 25 knockouts. Moving forward, the Baltimore native will look to improve his resumé with other fights within the 135-pound division. Meanwhile, Romero will regroup and campaign for a rematch.
“I exposed him and we need to run that sh*t back. I had him running like a bitch the entire fight,” Romero said during the post-fight press conference.
A thunderous knockout sets the stage for another major bout in the lightweight division next week. Devin Haney and George Kambosos will fight for the undisputed lightweight title on Saturday at Marvel Stadium in Australia.
