With only five songs on Soundcloud, Toronto’s own Jon Vinyl is quickly making a name for himself in the world of R&B and Soul. Vinyl grew up in the Toronto in a household surrounded by old soul music. In an interview earlier this year, Vinyl described his musical upbringing by saying, “Growing up, my mom played a lot of old soul music. I don’t know if I liked it then because it was just around me, but I started imitating it. I guess my tone wasn’t too bad. My brother [Jamil] told me it wasn’t too bad. So I trained, and here I am.”
At age twenty, Vinyl has put school and work to the side to focus completely on his musical passions. Betting on himself has paid off so far. Vinyl’s five singles have earned him over 100,000 plays, three thousand Spotify followers and a feature on Noisey. Among the five singles he’s put out, “Nostalgia”, appears to be a fan favorite. Released back in 2017, it leads all of his records with over 37,000 spins. When asked about the song, Vinyl said, “Nostalgia is merely a reflection of past life experiences and me trying to find my way. Sometimes sentimental things keep us from moving forward physically and emotionally.”
One of Vinyl’s main goals is to emit positivity through his music and personality. While his career is young, it’s safe to say that he’s well on his way to accomplishing his goal. His soulful and uplifting energy is present throughout his music and it will hopefully expand to a larger audience as time goes on. Stream Vinyl’s “Cherry Blossom” and “Nostalgia” above.
