NYC’s own Extra Butter is back once again for a new collaboration with the folks at adidas Originals for a continuation of their last effort between the 2. This time around for the Extra Butter x adidas Originals Vanguard Part 2 the silhouettes chosen are the adidas Originals Rod Laver and Stan Smith. If you thought there was only one installation of the Adidas – Vanguard compendium, then you don’t know Butter. To complete this explorative collection, two archetypal Adidas silhouettes have been given that “avant” Extra Butter touch, transporting them from conventional to cutting-edge. In an homage to academic youth with a keen sense of school spirit, thriving in the arts and extracurricular activities, EB has transformed both the classic Rod Laver and its sibling, the Stan Smith, into cinematic-reminiscent, iconic colorways.
“The Scholar,” in the form of the Rod Laver, reminds of academia with a multi-tonal, navy nubuck background, miniature bees in embroidered gold shining boldly against the opaque laterals. Red striped foxing runs the length of the tongue echoing private school uniform that pops against the darker, midnight blue tongue. The two metallic crest pins signify merits in “Punctuality” and “Perfect Attendance,” citations in scholastic achievement. Navy laces and matching eyelets complement the academic tones. Collegiate red pen meets white-out liquid paper as a classic gumsole frames the shoe.
The Stan Smith is reimagined as “Wunderkind,” an ode to the child prodigy in its streamlined presentation, mirroring the elite thought processes in young whiz kids. The camel-tan colored, wool texture upper is precise and methodically exact as it wraps cleanly around the entire upper of the shoe, juxtaposed by the luxurious black leather on which the Smith logo is emblazoned. While the “Wunderkind” presents as simple in its monochromatic hue, the accents masterfully crafted into this shoe make it anything but modest. Subtle, elegant touches, such as the flat brass eyelets add opulent details to this refined version of a classic Adidas sneaker. A luxe, butter-soft leather lining is visible on the interior collar in a refined, tennis heritage palette of navy, white, and red. The tri-colored collar transitions to a hidden, surprisingly adventurous print on the inner collar, as well as a multi-patterned insole that remains to be seen only by the wearer.
